The GIPHY GIF Library is Now Available!

We've added the GIPHY GIF Library to VideoStew!

VideoStew now supports GIPHY, the world's largest GIF library. GIPHY provides a wide array of content, ranging from animated GIFs known as memes to moving sticker images. Although the total volume has not been disclosed, Giphy estimates that over a billion GIFs are shared per day! That's a mind-boggling amount of activity.

Why do we call GIFs "moving cuts"?

The origin of this Internet jargon is DCInside, an online community. As a community focused on digital cameras, posts without pictures were often deleted by the administrators. As a result, users started to upload "cuts" images to avoid their posts being "cut", or deleted. This was the start of the "cuts" culture, and over time, animated GIFs came to be called "moving cuts", which today we simply refer to as "moving cuts".

We offer animated GIFs and moving sticker images!

Animated GIFs are regular images that fill the screen with movement. You can search for these in VideoStew under 'Image > Giphy Gif'. They can add some spice to your video, especially in transition moments or when a joke is needed and can be enhanced with sound effects.

When creating videos, Giphy’s moving sticker images are incredibly useful. You can search for them in VideoStew under 'Image > Giphy Sticker'. These moving stickers have a transparent background so you can overlay them on your video to create a particular mood. For example, the image below shows what appears when you search for "love". The end of the scroll is a mystical place that no one has yet to discover.

Proper utilization of GIFs requires understanding of Fair Use.

Many YouTube channels we watch utilize various GIFs. Does this mean that GIFs are free from copyright? Or did they all ask for permission from the copyright owner on a case-by-case basis?

To put it simply, no. Fair use is a concept decided upon by the judiciary and cannot be determined by an individual. Therefore, even if someone claims, "I used it fairly!", if the court does not agree, the person can be considered to have violated copyright.

According to YouTube's Fair Use Guidelines, if new expression or meaning has been added to the original, it can be viewed as fair use. This might seem a bit complex, but it will make more sense when we look at our country's copyright law.

The following is the content of Article 35, Clause 3, Paragraph 1 of our country's copyright law:

The work can be used if it does not conflict with the usual usage of the work and
It does not unjustly harm the legitimate interests of the author.

In other words, adding a GIF as a subsidiary fun factor to my video can be viewed as fair use. However, since neither YouTube nor Giphy can be responsible or decide on this matter, we recommend that you check out YouTube's Fair Use Guide and Giphy's License Agreement before using the GIFs in your videos.
